RE: How To Make an AR Server an Admin Server

Thanks for pointing that out LJ.

Makes sense I suppose, considering we noticed that ARS insists on setting itself as server group member even if you switch it off on a single server environment since upgrading to 9.1.4.

@Thomas: This will mean that you will also have to set the server’s ranking for Admin Ops to 1 in the AR System Server Group Operation Ranking form:

You will also need to check the central config settings.

Backup these settings from Applications--AR System Administration--AR System Administration Console--System--General--Centralized Configuration Backups

Then delete all settings pertaining to any server other that the one you are intending to be the sole machine (if they exist) from Applications--AR System Administration--AR System Administration Console--System--General--Centralized Configuration

Also backup all data in the AR System Service Failover Ranking form before deleting any records pertaining to other servers (if they exist). Make sure that you have at least one entry in this form (for the Normalization engine) if the server is running ITSM:

Then restart the server.

This is how we got a dev server set up as a single server from a DB refresh from prod earlier this year.

(BTW, we ran the MPS Restore tool on this system and restarted it again thereafter because we had done a db refresh.)

HTH.

Theo Fondse

Yes, but as of SP3 or SP4 (I forget which) BMC decided that all servers are part of a server group, even if it's a group of 1, I'm not part of the team that does this sort of thing but I believe it simplified the process of 'who is doing what' if all servers do it the same way instead of some of them doing it one way and groups doing it differently....so, as of the SP that implements it...you must be in a server group.

That means nothing in a server group

You might need to go into ar.cfg on your server and make sure admin operations aren’t disabled.  It should be set to False.

Did you shutdown the other servers in the group when doing the install/upgrade?  Not sure if that would make a difference.

Thank Theo, but the DB ist restored or copy of anything. We just upgraded the server from 7.6 to 9.1.04 and the server is running fine but we’d like a complete installation. All the forms haven’t been updated and the server is seen as a secondary for some reason...

Hi Thomas,

Is the DB a restored copy from prod or another environment?

I would also make sure to change the servergroup name (Server Name Alias) on the new server if the DB was a copy of another server’s DB.

Also have a look at the below to get more info on the places to fix server references:

You could also use MPS to fix server references:

I did everything you said, I even now removed the ARSystemInstalledConfiguraiton.xml and on the last screen before the installation the installer already says it will perform a a secondary server install / upgrade.

Again, my question is where is the primary / secondary info stored? Why is the ranking config being ignored?

We had a similar  issue where our srvgrp forms in the DB still had references to other servers.  Make sure tgose tables are correct.

after setting it, did you either press the 'sync' button, or restart the server to have it take effect?

Did that. Zero effect on anything.

Rank it as an Admin in the Server Group Operational Ranking form, and for that matter, rank it as 1 for the rest of them as well.

Thank Carl, yes it is. 9.1.04

Fine, then let me rephrase my question. How to tell the server that it’s an admin server so that the installer imports / updates the system forms etc,
